    HARRISON COUNTY SCHOOLS

  • As stated in Policy 2412, the Harrison County Board of Education will provide home/hospital instruction to a student who is temporarily unable to attend classes for a period that has lasted or will last for three (3) consecutive weeks or more due to an injury or illness.  The said injury or illness must be certified in writing by a licensed physician who specializes in the health condition that may temporarily confine a student to home or hospital. These services may not replace full time instruction on an ongoing basis. The expectation is that the student will return to the regular classroom.

    This application for Homebound Services must be submitted by a licensed physician who specializes in the health condition and include the following information:

    1. the diagnosis or nature of the injury or illness;
    2. the specific reasons and period of time that the student must remain home or in the hospital;
    3. the criteria or conditions under which the student will return to school; and
    4. the projected end date of the homebound services.

    Homebound instruction may be extended by resubmitting a written statement from a licensed physician who specializes in the health condition at least every three (3) months.  Open-ended requests for home/hospital instruction will not be accepted.

    Instructional time will be provided at a location determined by the Board (not necessarily the student’s home) when a responsible adult in addition to the teacher is present.  The County may withhold homebound instruction when:

    1. the instructor’s presence in the place of a student’s confinement presents a hazard to his/her health;
    2. a parent or other adult in authority is not a home with the student during the hours of instruction; and
    3. the condition of the student is such as to preclude his/her receiving any benefit from such instruction.

    The student will receive a minimum of six (6) hours of home instruction per week in the core content areas of English/language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies only.

    Students are “Bound to the Home” with the exception of Doctor’s appointments and may not participate in any extracurricular activities outside the home.
